In the Spotlight, June 12
Play the Parks with PRIDE
Play the Parks with Pride will kick off Celebrations on June 24th.
Downtown Yonge BIA presents year two of Play the Parks. Trinity Square and College Park Courtyard will be animated twice a week with free concerts and fitness classes throughout the summer. This year promises to be an exciting season featuring up and coming artists playing wide array of music - from folk to rock to jazz. Hard Candy Fitness Toronto and Bell Trinity GoodLife Fitness are bringing their high energy dance classes outdoors! Click here for Play the Parks schedule.
*North By North East (NXNE) Alternative Stage will also be playing Trinity Square on June 16, 18, 20; and College Park on June 19.
June 19–22, 2014 at Yonge-Dundas Square
If you’ve been to NXNE before, you know we put on four nights of huge, all-ages headlining shows at Yonge-Dundas Square that will have Toronto talking for the rest of the year. If you’re new, it’s pretty simple: show up (rain or shine) and see a bunch of bands for free. Yes, that’s right. Free – no fine print. For full schedule at Yonge-Dundas square please click here.
MONDAY, JUNE 16 | Trinity Square Park
The Shoe (USA) 12:00 PM
The Shoe is the improvisational music project between actress Jena Malone ('The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,' 'Into the Wild,' and 'Sucker Punch') and musician Lem Jay Ignacio. Malone brings with her an instrument called "The Shoe" – an old steamer trunk with a plethora of electronic instruments inside.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18 | Trinity Square Park
Briar Rabbit (Chicago, IL, USA) 12:00 PM
Singer / Songwriter
Growing up under the watchful eye of his uncle B.B. King, it seems only fitting that Briar Rabbit has grown up to become quite the gentleman, and one that is musically inclined. From the midwest to the middle east, Rabbit has captivated crowds with romantic melodies and colourfully layered narrative that evokes painfully beautiful imagery through honest lyricism.
THURSDAY, JUNE 19 | College Park
Sc Mira (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) 12:00 PM
Sc Mira's honest strums are mixed with emotive lyrics, creating music that is kind and at times haunting. Drawing inspiration from many artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, and The Avett Brothers, Sc Mira shapes music that is written for old souls and the young at heart. Their country influence and quivering vocals breed a new type of folk rock with pop sensibilities.
FRIDAY, JUNE 20 | Trinity Square Park
Toby Goodshank (New York, NY) 12:00 PM
Toby Goodshank made his high-profile musical debut playing acoustic guitar in The Moldy Peaches. He has a prolific solo career, recording 14 albums in a five-year span (and effectively making us all look lazy by comparison.) While his style usually focuses around his solo guitar and singing abilities, it also draws from a variety of pop, underground art, and musical influences. Unconventional song structures, humor, innuendo, and wordplay are staples of his music.

American Kid, Patty Griffin’s seventh album, is her first album of mainly new material since 2007. This new album – much of which Griffin says “was written to honor my father” – returns to typical Patty Griffin territory: powerful, personal and unpredictable songs arranged and performed in a style that doesn’t entirely repeat anything she’s done on her previous albums.
