Downtown Yonge BIA Laneway Waste Audit
In recent years, the Downtown Yonge BIA has been working to improve the safety, functionality, and appearance of our lane ways.
The first step is to address the quantity and location of waste collection in the lane ways, with the aim of improving service for businesses and making the lanes more attractive for users.
There are a very wide range of solutions used by other major metropolitan cities which are we are considering implementing in our BIA. In order to find the best solution for our neighbourhood, we undertook a 24-hour audit of the waste generated by businesses which back onto O’Keefe Lane from Shuter Street to Dundas Street.
This waste audit required all businesses along O’Keefe Lane to participate and we were very happy with the responses and the cooperation of all our members. Thank you to all participating businesses and your staff for helping ensure the audit was a success. Now that the waste has been collected our contractor will analyze it off site to determine how best to maximize recycling and diversion, as well as to understand the quantity of waste produced.
The information gathered by this audit will be confidentially shared with each individual business to help improve recycling and waste reduction, as well as provide us with information to improve future services. We hope to apply these lessons across the full 1.5km lane ways network in Downtown Yonge.
