Community Council nixes plan for 80-storey tower at Toronto city core

Toronto’s Community Council has given the thumbs-down to a proposed 80 storey mixed-use condominium tower at the corner of Elm and Yonge streets — touching off what could be an Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) battle over what would be one of the tallest buildings on the Toronto skyline.

Toronto planners had already recommended refusal of the plan by the Goldberg Group to build the tower at 8 Elm Street, and when the report came to the October 13 meeting of the Toronto and East York Community Council, neighbours voiced their support of that refusal.

Drop in Resource Booklet

A new kind of map is being distributed in downtown Toronto, showing where people in need can find nearby help. Developed by the Downtown Yonge BIA, the Downtown Toronto Drop-In Resource booklet includes 20 drop-in agencies within 1.8 kilometres of Yonge and Dundas.

Working in partnership with Ryerson University, the Downtown Yonge BIA researched and produced the booklets as a pilot project, aimed at raising awareness of the services available and better coordinating access to those services.

The Downtown Yonge BIA's Strategic Plan 2016

The Downtown Yonge BIA (DYBIA) is embarking on a strategic planning process that focuses on the rapidly-changing and growing neighbourhood and the role of the organization.

Update
Downtown Yonge has spoken! After numerous focus groups & a wide deployment of our Strategic Plan survey, we will now begin analyzing and sifting through the responses & distinct thoughts mentioned by all the stakeholders, members & friends of Downtown Yonge. A four (4)-member sub-committee of the DYBIA’s Board of Management was struck in September 2016 to work closely with the consulting team, and a summary of the initial findings will be released during our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November 2016.

Background
With fast-paced residential development, significant population increases, a trend towards intensification and the range of challenges that growth brings, DYBIA recognized the need to evolve, be entrepreneurial, and have the ability to act on market opportunities.

This means the organization needs to be empowered with a cohesive vision and strategic framework that both "dreams big" but allows for being nimble and flexible in execution.
To that end, a month-long search for the right consultant began in early May 2016 with the distribution of a closed RFP to a group of seven strategic planning specialists.

Submitted proposals were carefully compared and contrasted to identify the best fit.

In June, the Executive Committee and Staff made recommendations to the DYBIA Board of Management, which approved the appointment of Sage Communications, a firm specializing not only in strategic development, but also community engagement- a key element of the DYBIA's mandate. For more on SageComm, please visit their website at: www.sagecomm.com

With extensive experience both with BIAs and in complex urban environments, SageComm is well positioned to take DYBIA to the next level.

The team from SageComm- spearheaded by co-founder and senior strategist Lindsay Sage- launched the strategic planning process in July at the bi-monthly Board meeting.

The plan will be defined in two distinct phases, which are expected to take about approximately six (6) months.

Phase I includes deep stakeholder engagement and research; and

Phase II includes board engagement and strategic plan development.

We will be bringing members and stakeholders up to speed about the Phase I findings at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November, but in the meantime please keep an eye on this space for regular updates, as well as on our Twitter & Facebook pages.
