ING Direct Canada is renaming itself Tangerine, a brand that it says reflects its image as an edgy, innovative bank.

The country’s largest online-only bank is required to change its name under the terms of its sale to the Bank of Nova Scotia in September, 2012.

The rebranding – including new signage and promotional materials – won’t take place until spring 2014, the company said Tuesday.

But the company said it decided to announce the name change as soon as it was chosen.

The Senator Restaurant has partnered with Hurrier

The Senator is Toronto’s oldest restaurant, dating back to the 19th century when it was just a house at 249 Victoria. Since then, the Senator became a Toronto landmark under the guidance of Bobby Sniderman. Bobby purchased the Senator in 1984 after a successful run at Sam the Record Man. The Senator has always focused on the highest quality ingredients like Cumbrae’s Farms Beef, organic milk from Sheldon Creek Dairy, fresh-squeezed orange juice, home-made stocks, sauces, and batters, and a commitment to only use organic wherever possible. The Senator is entering the digital age with an expanded social presence and a whole new look. Learn more about the Senator at: thesenator.com, Facebook, Twitter, and more.

80% of responding Toronto Mayoral and Council candidates support building the Minimum Grid

Earlier this year, Cycle Toronto called on all candidates running for mayor and council for the next term of council to commit to building the Minimum Grid: a city-wide grid of 100 km of protected bike lanes and 100 km of bicycle boulevards by 2018.

You can find the press release here.

Is your business wheelchair accessible?

Here are some of the things to consider:

- Is the entrance barrier-free? (ie. no stairs to enter, unobstructed sidewalk)
- Are doorways wide enough (minimum 35”) for a wheelchair or walker to pass through?
- Are some of the tables standard height (29”) with removable chairs?  Bar height tables or booths pose challenges.
- Are washrooms on the main floor or do they have elevator/ramp access?
- Are washroom stalls big enough (minimum 72”x72”) for a wheelchair to enter?

Why should wheelchair accessibility matter to you? People with disabilities account for an estimated $25 billion in national consumer spending each year. This group is also estimated to influence the spending decisions of 12 to 15 million other Canadians. In addition to the large spending power of this group, accessibility should be on your radar because of the imminent implementation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The AODA will soon mandate that all businesses and public spaces meet minimum accessibility requirements. If cost is an issue, new initiatives such as the StopGap program and the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund are available:

At AccessTO we review restaurants, bars and cafes that are wheelchair accessible. The criteria used is developed from the City of London Design Standards and Accessibility Guidelines for the City of Toronto. We provide measurements and photos to our readers so that they can evaluate a restaurant for themselves and participate in Toronto’s vibrant food and entertainment scene. If you think your business meets our criteria please get in touch - we would love to discuss reviewing you on our site!

Check out our website for more helpful tips.

March 21–22, 2015

Downtown Toronto — conference space to be announced

Art with Potential

Please join us!
Live art competition & reception at Ada Slaight Hall, Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas Street East, Toronto.
Eight carefully selected youth artists compete for one cash prize.
All artists receive a portion of the sale price of their art.

Why this event matters
Youth artists may include at-risk and homeless youth. Raising the Roof will work with our network of Partner Agencies in Toronto to identify promising, talented youth artists who qualify to compete.

Art with Potential is not only a fundraiser to support Raising the Roof’s work towards long-term solutions to homelessness. It is an opportunity for youth to build their portfolio of work and receive compensation.

We know that employment is a critical success factor for at-risk and homeless youth. By supporting eight youth artists with an opportunity to showcase their talents and passion, we can pave the way for their brighter future.

Case for Support
Proceeds from Art with Potential will support Raising the Roof’s National Homelessness Initiatives. Families with children are the fastest growing group of citizens experiencing homelessness; it is estimated that there are currently 22,500 children in Canada who are homeless. Raising the Roof’s National Initiatives will support service-providers, communities and governments in finding lasting solutions to this national crisis. Beginning in 2013, we initiated practical community-based research into the needs of homeless families, focusing on the key issues of domestic violence, education, employment, housing, and mental health. We are developing a national framework, articulated in a final report – along with supporting tools, resources and promising practices – which we will then share with governments, communities and other stakeholders across Canada. Our goal is to shine a spotlight on this extremely vulnerable – and growing – segment of society, and to give a voice to the tens of thousands of Canadian children and their families who are without a place to call home.
