A place to showcase the cutting edge of Toronto’s vibrant Jazz, Funk and Soul scene. These artists have been curated to transport you back to a time when Jazz and Funk were dominating force on the streets. Black UnicornBlack Unicorn

Singing drummer Zoe Ackah, Grammy-winning Reggae guitar legend Carl Harvey, and bass man extraordinaire Dane Wedderburn are BLAK UNiCRN—a magical, minimalist, genre-bashing, heavy-hitting, bitch-band-destroying beast that appears in the depth of night. All sub-genres of Reggae and Rock are crushed together forming tunes of diamond-like solidity. Original tunes and mashups shine in unexpected and novel ways.

VersaVersa

VERSA is an audio/visual collective led by visual artist Monika Hauck and musician Alex Ricci  based in Guelph/Toronto. Surreal and shimmering, VERSA performances capture eyes and ears with powerful instrumental music and immersive live projections. The duo explores the creative possibilities that emerge when combining traditional art forms, such as paper marbling and analog video, with new techniques for visualizing sound, live audio looping and activation of alternative spaces.

In performance, the collective is bolstered by appropriately outrageous drumming by Will Vandermey, Danny B’s spurtive saxophone, and atmospheric synth by Todd Harrison. VERSA has performed at numerous Canadian music and arts events including Hillside Festival (Guelph ON), Hold Fast Contemporary Art Festival (St. John’s NL), Kazoo! Fest (Guelph ON), Night\\Shift Place-Hacking Festival (KW ON), Wavelength Music Festival (Toronto ON), and Nuit Blanche (Ottawa ON). The group has also been the supported and funded for performances and recordings by FACTOR, Ontario Arts Council, Waterfront Toronto, and Ed Video Media Arts Centre.

Dancing Fool

Pack your dancing shoes in your lunchbox and let the danceable music of the Americas take you away. Let this feel good cultural music of Toronto make you forget about being at work. Tuesdays this summer at Trinity Square Park will feature Latin, Americana, Salsa, Reggae, and Samba music that will have you up out of your seat and calling in “sick.”

Eric St-Laurent TrioEric St-Laurent Trio

Afro-Cuban rhythms combined with Jazz and Blues elements are the heart of the trio's music. Infectious grooves, plenty of interaction and a strong taste for adventure round off the picture.

With the unique and highly virtuosic rhythm section of Jordan O'Connor (bass) and Michel DeQuevedo (percussion), this band creates excitement, joy, and a few other emotions that simply haven't been named yet.

Born and raised in Montreal, St-Laurent studied improvisation in New York before moving to Berlin where he toured with both the big and small names of the German and Scandinavian music scenes. Winner of the SOCAN award for Best Original Composition at the Montreal Jazz Festival and The Best Band Award at the Vienne (France) Jazz Festival, St-Laurent has been featured on over 50 recordings, produced multiple albums, composed scores for short films and theatre, and toured extensively in Europe and Canada.

Since returning to Toronto, Canada, St-Laurent has recorded and toured with Till Bronner, Dave Liebman, Dave Douglas, Rebekka Bakken, Slide Hampton, Luc de la Rocheliere, Sylvie Paquette, Richard Underhill, David Binney, Jojo Mayer, Carlos Del Junco, Bernard Primeau and represented Canada at the International Guitar Summit in Nice (MIDEM).

BrownmanBrownman Electryc Trio

In recent years, when not touring the globe as the featured soloist with hip-hop superstar JAY-Z or subbing into pop legend Paul Simon’s band, the Toronto-based multi-award-winning Trinidadian-born trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI spends much of his artistic time in the exploration of “chordless” jazz - music produced without a chordal instrument (guitar or keyboard). He had previously explored this tonal quality for a decade with his now internationally acclaimed latin-jazz group CRUZAO, and in more recently with his critically acclaimed Miles Davis influenced BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO. This trio’s 2nd release entitled “Gravitation: A Study In Freefall” on Brownman’s own label Browntasauras Records shot to number 4 on the iTunes USA jazz charts and was declared “the new standard in electric jazz” by National Public Radio (NPR) in New York City.
