TD Presents Play the Parks

Brought to you by Downtown Yonge BIA in partnership with Canada’s Music Incubator

Play the Parks is back for its fifth season! From June to September, we invite you to sit back, relax and soak in the summer sun as you enjoy free concerts at five different locations in the Downtown Yonge BIA. This season is curated by Canada’s Music Incubator. Join us throughout the week at five different locations throughout the Downtown Yonge BIA all summer long!

Dancing Fool

Pack your dancing shoes in your lunchbox and let the danceable music of the Americas take you away. Let this feel good cultural music of Toronto make you forget about being at work. Tuesdays this summer at Trinity Square Park will feature Latin, Americana, Salsa, Reggae, and Samba music that will have you up out of your seat and calling in “sick.”

Sinners ChoirSinners Choir

The Sinners Choir is a trio comprised of three generations of seasoned Toronto sidemen: bassist Terry Wilkins, drummer Adam Warner and guitarist Adam Beer-Colacino. The band takes each player out of their sideman role and allows them to showcase themselves as singers and composers with a resonant 3 part harmony as an added bonus.

The age range in this band reflects the age range of their fans. This is not an every day occurrence in this music business. The band shows  a deep understanding of the last hundred years of Roots/Americana and presents itself with both a simultaneously gritty and sweet approach. The depth of original repertoire is a testament to having 3 composers within. The band is capable of playing a full concert length presentation of wholly original music.

Sunshine & Good PeopleSunshine & Good People

The power trio of childhood friends, Tsayffo (lead vocals, guitar, percussions) and Mastermind (lead guitar, vocals,) along with Mercury Brown (drums, loops, vocals) overlay and cross-cut music, culture and insight, hard-won through first-hand experience of travelling from their Montreal home to India and beyond. Their music reflects the strength of spirit overcoming the chaos of the human condition – such as the state of the Tibetan Buddhist monks whom they made friends with in Dharamsala.

A new album is in the works and will be released in advance of festivals and tour dates for this year. In addition to regular touring, the band showcased at MIDEM (France), Canadian Music Week, NXNE (Toronto), Pop Montreal as well as headlining concerts for ROCK FOR TIBET. Since their early forays to raise awareness and support for displaced Tibetans, with the growing spread of people displaced by government forces, Sunrise & Good People shine a light through their music on all fronts and across all borders.

From Tip to Top

Have you ever thought “I need more culture?” Well, this is your chance. Featuring music and instruments from around the world, various genres of artists will get to showcase their talents on instruments you know but didn’t know could do that plus instruments you’ve never even heard of. At the McGill Granby Parkette expect to see and hear World Music, Experimental, Spoken Word and Diverse sounds.

PerlHazePerlHaze

After years of chance encounters, near misunderstandings and missed opportunities, Toronto based singers Terra Hazelton and Sophia Perlman discovered a mutual love for music, harmonies and songwriting that went far beyond the borders of their respective jazz careers.

Since the band’s Christmas baptism by blizzard, PerlHaze has been studying the songwriters who inspire them most taking their first steps as aspiring songwriters, and learning to play (at press time) six instruments between them, and fine-tuned their uncanny vocal blend creating harmonies on Joanne Mackell’s 2013 release Every Day & Night and Jeff Gladstone’s debut album Hell of Girl, which was produced by Terra, and recorded in her Toronto loft. They also appear in the album’s first music video, One Little Accident Away, which was selected to screen at the No Fear Film Festival, and was an Editor’s Pick for Noir Nation.

Os TropiesOs Tropies

Os Tropies grew out of the impossibility of travelling back in time. Influenced by the music of the revolutionary tropicalia movement of late 1960s Brazil, these six Canadians versed themselves in psychedelic rock and Brazilian popular music in order to imagine what it was like to be a Brazilian music radical in a time of heavy political turmoil and protest song purism. It turns out that even in present day Toronto, there is still plenty to say and plenty of ways to say it: fuzz guitars, theremins, berimbaus, funky orchestral triangles, some sha-la-las, lots of bongo, cowboy swagger, haunted church organs and fraudulent recordings of paranormal activity all make up the palette of sounds that Os Tropies draw upon in the creation of their international- cannibalist-love-affair-of-a-sound, offering up covers of the tropicalia numbers that inspire them and originals written in the spirit of irreverent and impassioned musical juxtaposition.
