Whats new DowntownCanon Theatre renamed as the Ed Mirvish Theatre
The historic Canon Theatre, located at 244 Victoria Street was renamed the Ed Mirvish Theatre on Tuesday, December 6, in honour of one of Toronto's key theatre figures. The announcement was made by Ed Mirvish's son, David Mirvish, at a special event at the theatre, which included special performances and appearances by tenor Michael Burgess, actress Shirley Douglas and singer Molly Johnson. Video messages from Premier Dalton McGuinty, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and an appearance by Mayor Rob Ford also honoured this auspicious renaming ceremony. Though it was managed by Mirvish Productions since 2001, the 91-year-old Ed Mirvish Theatre was officially acquired by the company in 2008.

In the Spotlight
Loblaws in Maple Leaf Gardens
The corner of Carlton and Church streets hasn't seen this much action in a while. The grand opening of Loblaws in Maple Leaf Gardens on Wednesday, November 30 was no ordinary grocery store launch. Three hundred shoppers waited in line for the store to open at 8 a.m. and a small crowd of media and special guests attended the "bread-cutting" ceremony hosted by Loblaws executive chairman, Galen Weston.
In his speech to the press, Mr. Weston touched on the special history of Maple Leaf Gardens that housed one of the most famous hockey arenas in Canada. Looking to the future of the space as a grocery store he said the goal was to make food center stage. It will "serve every day shopping needs with every day value," he said. Knowing that the store will serve a variety of demographics he continued by saying "every department provides international depth we believe will inspire without intimidating."
Once Mr. Weston and Councillor Minnan-Wong, from City Council, completed the "bread-cutting" ceremony, the red curtain blocking the store from view was drawn. Media, guests and shoppers flooded the store taking in the unique aesthetics of the historic building. Immediately upon entering at the main doors, it was clear that some elements of the original arena had been included in the store design. A large art installation shaped as a maple leaf and made from original arena chairs is prominently displayed on the east wall. Walking through Loblaws hockey fans can locate the centre ice mark in one of the grocery aisles.
But, as Mr. Weston stated, food is the main focus of the store. From the 18 foot-high cheese wall to the sushi bar and tea emporium, shoppers can find pretty much anything they are looking for. Spanning 85,000 square feet, the store is much larger than most downtown grocery locations. As well as a large deli, specialty food areas, produce and grocery aisles, Loblaws offers food buffets with ready-made meals, a comfortable cafeteria area with wi-fi, dry-cleaning services and a caf. Upstairs houses a large LCBO and Joe Fresh.
You can shop at (or just go visit) Loblaws in Maple Leaf Gardens at 60 Carlton St. Visit www.loblaws.ca for more information.
