Safety

The Downtown Yonge BIA advocates on behalf of the business community for initiatives and practices that create a safe environment for visitors to the area. As well as representing the Downtown Yonge community to police services at 51 and 52 Division the BIA hosts quarterly security meetings to ensure area safety concerns are raised and met. Another service provided by the BIA is a subscriber-based “Yonge Watch” email blast that will alert interested citizens about area safety issues that may arise.

Community

Streets to Home: The BIA worked very hard to advocate for the creation of Street to Homes a group dedicated to the ideal that housing is a human right. Homelessness and panhandling in the downtown core are symptoms of the larger social issue regarding housing. The BIA engages Streets to Homes with the business community to work together to advocate for long-term solutions to homelessness.

Area Initiatives

CCTV Cameras: In light of safety concerns in the downtown, several years ago the BIA advocated for the installation of CCTV cameras that ensure there are more eyes on the street, keeping pedestrians safe. Furthermore, the BIA invested in the fiber optic hardware that feeds the CCTV lines.

Police Foot Patrols

Downtown Yonge members have long advocated for additional highly-visible policing. The 20 dedicated officers from the Toronto Police Service continue to patrol the Yonge Street corridor. This commitment is ongoing given the Police support of community-based policing.
