Active Transportation

Active transportation is any form of human-powered transportation, the most common of which are walking and cycling. Active transportation provides health and economic benefits to individuals, businesses, as well as the wider community. For this reason, the Downtown Yonge BIA is committed to increasing active transportation usage within the area through education, advocacy and free cycling-related services.

Research, Education & Advocacy

Active Transportation GuideThe Downtown Yonge BIA has developed educational materials intended to encourage commuters to incorporate walking and cycling into their routes. We have also begun to collect information on local commuting patterns as a way to track the progression of active transportation uptake over the years.

Cycling Infrastructure

Bicycle Parking

Downtown Yonge is full of cyclists. Increasing the number of bike parking spaces in Downtown Yonge is just one way we’re making the neighbourhood more bike-friendly. We designed rectangular bike racks which can fit a higher number of bikes using a smaller footprint, as compared to the City rings.

In 2013, the Downtown Yonge BIA installed 54 of the BIA bike racks, creating over 100 new bike parking spaces in the area. This year, we will be installing another 102 racks in key locations where there is an exceptionally high-demand for bicycle parking, such as Dundas Street West between Yonge and Bay, Yonge and Gerrard, and Bay and College. We are also working closely with the City to identify appropriate locations for additional City rings.
